Washington Travel Guide: The Ultimate Guide to Exploring Washington State
I’ve called Washington home for the past four years, but my connection to the state started long before that. Growing up, I visited family here and still remember wandering through Pike Place Market as a kid, watching fish fly through the air and exploring the waterfront. I never imagined I’d one day move here and build my life among these mountains.
Since then, Washington has completely changed the way I travel. What began as weekend hikes quickly turned into backpacking trips, sunrise photography missions, and countless miles exploring trails across the state. The mountains have become such a big part of my life that friends joke they’re now my entire personality—and honestly, they’re probably right.
Whether you’re planning your first road trip or returning to explore somewhere new, I’ve organized all of my Washington guides below. Start with my one-week itinerary if you’re visiting for the first time, or dive into the national parks, hiking guides, food recommendations, and seasonal adventures that interest you most.
Why Visit Washington?
Mount Baker
After traveling extensively throughout the United States, I still believe Washington is one of the country’s most diverse outdoor destinations. In a single trip, you can hike through a temperate rainforest, stand beneath glaciated volcanoes, wander alpine meadows bursting with wildflowers, explore the rugged Pacific coastline, and discover crystal-clear alpine lakes tucked deep into the mountains.
Washington’s climate also makes it a destination worth visiting year-round. While Mount Rainier, the North Cascades, and many alpine trails often remain snow-covered well into early summer, lower-elevation hikes stay accessible for much of the year if you don’t mind embracing a little Pacific Northwest rain.
More than Just mountains
Washington isn’t just defined by its landscapes. Generations of immigrants helped shape the state – from Scandinavian fishermen and loggers who established communities throughout Puget Sound to Chinese and Japanese immigrants who contributed to the region’s railroads, agriculture, fishing industry, and commerce. Today, that heritage blends with cultures from around the world, creating incredible food, vibrant neighborhoods, and one of the best coffee scenes in the country.
From riding a ferry across Puget Sound to grabbing coffee before an early morning hike, Washington offers experiences that feel uniquely Pacific Northwest.
The Best of Seattle
Pike Place is one of my favorite spots in the state. Regardless of how many times I go, I still love it! Check out all my recommendations for where to eat at Pike Place.
Don’t miss the iconic Seattle Underground Tour! A super unique experience – most visitors describe it as one of their favorite tours.
Consider getting the Seattle City Pass. You’ll bundle and save to see Seattle’s top attractions like the Space Needle (so iconic), Chihuly Garden and Glass (gorgeous and sooo unique)!
Want to experience something a little more loved by locals? Check out Woodinville, an iconic getaway from Seattle known for their 100+ wine tasting rooms and their summertime concerts. It’s a growing tourist area!

Hi, I’m Amber —
A Michigan native now living in Washington with a deep love for travel and the outdoors. What started with church mission trips and years of traveling across the U.S. as a nurse has grown into a passion for exploring destinations across Asia and America through hiking, scenic landscapes, local food, wildlife encounters, and underwater adventures. Sometimes I’m joined by my goldendoodle, Millie, but I’m always traveling with my camera. My goal is to help you feel inspired and confident that travel is possible — no matter where you’re starting from.
