One of the best things about Hawaii’s beaches is that they are all public access – meaning you can enjoy the sand and surf even if you’re not staying at a resort.

The catch? Finding parking!

I feel so lucky to have lived and worked on Oahu for several months. To this day, it’s still one of my favorite places in the world – and I love going back to visit! I can confidently say that Hawaii isn’t just a random place – it’s a magical place that will forever change your life.

If you’re planning your Hawaii trip, chances are you’re heading to Oahu, the most populous island (and my favorite!). While it’s home to Honolulu’s hustle and bustle, Oahu boasts some of the most breathtaking beaches in the world.

Whether you’re looking for classic tourist hotspots or hidden gems, this guide will help you find the best beaches in Oahu for your perfect beach day.

1. Waikiki Beach – The Iconic Hotspot

Waikiki Beach. One of the best beaches in Oahu.

No trip to Oahu is complete without a visit to Waikiki Beach. Located in the heart of downtown Honolulu, this world-famous beach is perfect if you want to rent a chair and umbrella, sip on a cold drink, and soak up the lively atmosphere.

Honestly? Waikiki wasn’t my favorite beach when I first arrived. It was loud and chaotic. But overtime? It grew on me. One of my FAVORITE things to do in Oahu is to grab a coffee at Honolulu Coffee Company in the Moana Surfrider and walk the beach for sunrise.

Waikiki Beach is also a great spot for learning how to surf, as the waves tend to be gentle here.

Parking: You’ll need to walk from somewhere in the city!

2. Ala Moana Beach – A Local Favorite

Just west of Waikiki, Ala Moana Beach Park is slightly more relaxed and a popular spot for locals. There is a reef a little way from shore, making the water near the shore calm and mostly shallow.

Many locals come here to swim laps in the morning and evenings. You’ll also see a lot of BBQs and picnics. On Friday nights, you can watch the iconic firework show from Magic Island (starting at 7:45 PM) – just be sure to get there early!

Plus, if you’ve booked a boat tour, there’s a good chance it will depart from nearby.

Parking: plentiful, but will fill up on popular days!

3. Ko Olina Lagoons – Family-Friendly Paradise

Located on Oahu’s west side, Ko Olina is famous for its four man-made lagoons that offer calm water, perfect for swimming. Due to its calm nature, this is one of the best places for families, especially if you’re traveling with young kids.

When I come to Ko Olina, I visit Disney Aulani Resort. You are welcome to grab a drink or food at their bar without needing entry into the resort. Day passes to use the waterpark are only available if you know someone staying at the resort.

Seeing a luau in Hawaii is a classic experience. I really enjoyed Paradise Cove, which was located in the Ko Olina area – but unfortunately, they closed down in 2025. Luau Kuala is the new luau in this area and has excellent reviews.

Parking: Fairly limited if you don’t use the concierge at one of the resorts. You will need to get there early in the morning, or get really lucky!

4. Waimanalo Beach – A Tropical Dream

Waimanalo Beach is an absolute gem, featuring powdery white sand and crystal-clear blue waters. It’s one of my favorite beaches on the island.

This spot can get a little windy, and the waves can be strong, but that just makes it perfect for wave jumping and boogie boarding!

You can expect to be surrounded by mostly locals here. Since it’s on the opposite side of the island from Honolulu, you’ll definitely need a rental car to get here. There is a parking lot available, but street parking is possible if the lot is full.

Note: bring your own food – there is not a lot around the immediate area.

5. Turtle Bay Resort – A North Shore Gem

Located on Oahu’s North Shore, Turtle Bay Resort is a little-known secret for accessing some truly gorgeous beaches.

You don’t have to stay at the resort – just walk through to find a perfect beach spot. Right when you walk up, there is a cove available to the public that is fairly popular and an excellent spot for kids. They also have rental chairs available here. However, you can keep going around the resort and find smaller, more secluded spots.

Plus, the North Shore offers volcanic landscapes and stunning sunsets, making it a must-visit for photographers and nature lovers.

Parking: Large lot available, but it does tend to fill up by mid-afternoon

6. Polo Beach – For the Adventurous Spirits

If you’re up for an adventure, head west from Hale‘iwa (North Shore) to Polo Beach, one of Oahu’s unofficial nude beaches.

There are two sides: east and west

The east side is one of Oahu’s unofficial nude beaches, but on the west side, you’ll find a normal-appearing beach.

The nude beach is definitely a unique experience, but even if you’re not stripping down, the beach itself is beautiful and peaceful.

Parking: Free parking available in a small lot and on the street. There’s a short, flat trail to get to the beach.

7. Secret Roadside Beaches – Your Own Slice of Paradise

One of the best-kept secrets on Oahu is simply pulling over along the northeastern coast and claiming your own little piece of paradise.

While these spots can be rocky and close to the road, they offer something rare – seclusion. If you’re tired of crowded beaches and want to relax in peace, this is the perfect option.

I highly recommend taking a day to go on a road trip from Kanehoe to Hale‘iwa. There are so many fun things to find here – like secret beach swings!

Parking: Pull over on the road, just make sure you’re out of the way of traffic!
