24 Hours in Yosemite: Steal my Perfect One-Day Itinerary
On our recent trip to San Francisco, we decided to take a little detour. Since I had never been to Yosemite, we carved out two days of our city trip to make the drive and experience this iconic national park. It was one of the best decisions we made—sometimes you just have to chase beauty where it’s waiting for you.
Even though we only had about 24 hours in the park, we packed in some unforgettable sights and still left room to relax and soak it all in. If you’re looking for a quick trip that captures the essence of Yosemite, here’s how you can make the most of your time.

Day 1: Sunset at Glacier Point
After checking in to your accommodation, grab some food to-go—you’ll want to bring dinner with you for tonight’s adventure. Before heading to your main destination, make a quick stop at Tunnel View. This famous viewpoint gives you your first sweeping panorama of Yosemite Valley, with El Capitan, Half Dome, and Bridalveil Fall all in view. It’s the perfect teaser of what’s to come.
Next, continue driving up to Glacier Point, one of Yosemite’s most breathtaking vistas. Arrive well before sunset to find a good spot and settle in for your picnic dinner. As the sun dips below the horizon, the granite cliffs and iconic Half Dome glow in pinks and golds. It’s a moment you’ll never forget.

Day 2: Sunrise to Sunset in Yosemite Valley
Set your alarm early—you’re heading back to Tunnel View, this time for sunrise. Watching the morning light creep into the valley is a completely different experience, soft and peaceful compared to last night’s fiery hues.
On your way down from Tunnel View, stop at Bridalveil Fall and take the short, easy hike to the base of the waterfall. In spring and early summer, you’ll feel its cool mist on your face!
Once you’ve worked up an appetite, grab breakfast and coffee at one of the park’s lodges or cafes—or enjoy a camp breakfast if you’re staying on-site. Then, take a little time to explore the visitor centers, exhibits, and shops in Yosemite Village. I especially loved visiting the Ansel Adams Gallery, where you can see and purchase prints of his iconic Yosemite photography.
Next, walk over to Lower Yosemite Fall. The trail is short and flat, and you’ll be treated to a spectacular up-close view of the tallest waterfall in North America.
By now, it’s probably time for lunch. Head over to El Capitan Meadow, where you can picnic while gazing up at the towering granite face of El Capitan. You might even spot climbers making their way up the rock!

After lunch, stop at Valley View, a lesser-known but equally stunning viewpoint that offers a lower-angle view of Yosemite Valley, with the Merced River in the foreground.
Continue your relaxed afternoon with some time at the Swinging Bridge Picnic Area. This is a wonderful place to lay out a blanket, splash your feet in the water, and soak in the scenery.
Before you call it a day, stroll across Sentinel Bridge, where you’ll get another postcard-perfect view of Half Dome reflected in the river. For a little more exercise, walk the Cook’s Meadow Loop, an easy, flat trail that winds through grassy meadows with multiple perspectives of Yosemite Falls and the surrounding cliffs.
Family & Accessibility Notes 👨👩👧👦♿
This itinerary is family-friendly and great for all ages, with plenty of stops that are easy to access and enjoy at your own pace. Many of the highlights — like Tunnel View, Glacier Point, Bridalveil Fall, Yosemite Valley View, and Lower Yosemite Falls — have parking areas nearby. The trails are short and mostly flat, making them accessible for visitors with limited mobility or disabilities as well (always check with park rangers to verify conditions and recommendations!)
Where to Stay 🛌
If you’re not camping, I highly recommend staying at Yosemite Valley Lodge, just like we did. The lodge is conveniently located in the heart of Yosemite Valley, making it perfect for a short trip. Being based in the valley means you’ll spend less time driving and more time enjoying the park’s incredible scenery. Our space was spacious and clean – perfect for our quick getaway.
One of the biggest perks of staying here is parking — you can leave your car at the lodge and take advantage of the Yosemite Valley Shuttle, which stops at all the major sights on the valley floor. This saves you the hassle of hunting for parking at each stop, especially during busy seasons.
For a quick trip, staying in the valley is the way to go!
Final Thoughts
Even in just one day, Yosemite’s natural wonders will leave you awestruck and refreshed. Adding it to our San Francisco trip made the whole experience even more special—trading the city skyline for granite peaks and waterfalls was exactly what my soul needed.
