Visiting Jingzijiao Wapan Salt Fields from Tainan: A Stunning Sunset Experience

When researching about Tainan, I saw the pictures of Jingzijiao Wapan Salt Fields and it quickly became top of my list to visit. Located in Beimen District, it is arguably one of the regions most picturesque spots – especially at sunset. If you’re visiting Tainan and looking for a unique side trip, this historic salt farm is well worth the journey.

How to Get to Jingzijiao Wapan Salt Fields from Tainan

Getting to Jingzijiao Wapan Salt Fields from Tainan can be a bit tricky without your own vehicle. The site is about 43 miles (70 km) north of Tainan and public transportation options are limited. The best way to visit is by hiring a private driver or taking a guided tour.

Why Visit Jingzijiao Wapan Salt Fields?

Jingzijiao is Taiwan’s oldest existing salt farm, dating back to 1818. The evaporation ponds, laid out in geometric patterns, create a stunning visual experience, especially as the sun sets and reflects off the shallow pools. I adore the mirror-like effect and was dying to get some photos of it. Due to time constraints, we missed it on our initial voyage to Tainan – but ended up circling back a second time to see it. It a must-visit for landscape photography!

Best Time to Visit: Sunset Magic

While I’m sure Jingzijiao is beautiful at any time of day, sunset is absolutely breathtaking. As the sun dips below the horizon, the sky explodes into shades of pink, orange, and purple, reflecting off the salt pans. The golden hour lighting creates an almost surreal atmosphere, definitely one of the most unique sunset spots in Taiwan.
