The Ultimate One-Day Itinerary for Banff: Sunrise to Sunset
Banff National Park is a bucket-list destination filled with breathtaking landscapes, crystal-clear lakes, and unforgettable adventures. I have been dying to see Banff and the surrounding areas and I finally had the chance on my way to Mount Assiniboine! If you only have one day in Banff, don’t worry—you can still experience some of its most iconic sights with this well-planned itinerary!
Note: This guide assumes you have one FULL DAY in the area. You may need to adjust depending on what time you arrive/leave.
From watching the sunrise at Moraine Lake to unwinding in the Banff Upper Hot Springs, this guide ensures you make the most of your time in this stunning alpine paradise.
1. Start Your Day with a Sunrise at Moraine Lake 🌄
⏰ Wake-up call: Early!
Moraine Lake is only accessible by shuttle, so be sure to book the Parks Canada sunrise bus in advance. Since you’ll be arriving before dawn, bring a flashlight or headlamp—it’s pitch black when you get there!
What to Do:
✔️ Climb the Rockpile Trail – A short but steep 10-15 minute hike that rewards you with a breathtaking panoramic sunrise over the turquoise lake. This is where you get some of the most iconic views! Head up quickly… it will get PACKED!
✔️ Take a stroll– There’s truly nothing like watching the first light. While there’s still even light in the early morning, head down the Rockpile and stroll along the lake. You’ll get some of those well known boat shots down by the water’s edge.
✔️ Grab a bite – If you stay long enough, the café at Moraine Lake will open, perfect for a quick warm-up.
Pro Tip:
Since Moraine Lake operates on a shuttle system, you can leave on any return bus once you’ve soaked in the views.

2. Explore Lake Louise: A Classic Banff Icon 🏔️
Your return shuttle will drop you near Lake Louise, one of the most famous lakes in the world.
Options for Exploring:
✔️ Take in the views – The emerald waters and glacier backdrop make for postcard-perfect photos.
✔️ Hike to the Lake Agnes Tea House and the Little Beehive – A moderate 6 mile trek that rewards you with fresh-baked treats and stunning alpine scenery.
✔️ Visit the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise – Browse the shops, warm up with coffee, or step inside to admire the historic hotel’s luxurious interior.
Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t great when I went to Lake Louise, and the view was almost completely clouded over! With no promising view, rain, and being solo for this adventure – I opted to save the Tea House hike for next time, but I can’t wait to go back and enjoy it!

3. Scenic Wildlife Drive on Bow Valley Parkway 🦌
On your way back toward town, take the Bow Valley Parkway, one of Banff’s most picturesque drives. Morant’s Curve is a must-stop photo spot, where you can capture a classic shot of the Canadian Pacific Railway winding through the mountains. I had mostly clouded over views driving back from Lake Louise, but there were plenty of spots to stop and snap some mountain peaks!
What to Look For:
✔️ Elk, bears, or moose – Wildlife sightings are common along this quiet stretch of road!
✔️ Stunning mountain views – Keep your camera ready at all times.
4. Lunch & Shopping in Downtown Canmore 🛍️
A short drive from Banff, Canmore is a charming mountain town with great food, local shops, and a relaxed vibe.
Where to Eat:
🥩 Tavern 1883 – Highly recommended for its fun atmosphere, excellent service, and delicious food. We tried the poutine (a Canadian classic) and one of the burgers, and it did not disappoint!
What to Do:
✔️ Shop for souvenirs – Canmore has unique boutiques and local artisan shops.
✔️ Enjoy the mountain town vibe – Stroll the picturesque streets and take in the views.

5. Capture the Perfect Shot of the Three Sisters 🏔️📸
One of Canmore’s most iconic landmarks is the Three Sisters Peaks. If you’re up for some epic photography, try these top viewing spots:
📍 Policeman’s Creek Boardwalk – A peaceful spot with reflections of the mountains in the water.
📍 Three Sisters Viewpoint – A quick and easy stop for a classic photo of the peaks.
Pro Tip:
For the best lighting, visit during golden hour (just before sunset).
6. Relax at Banff Upper Hot Springs 🌊♨️
After a long day of hiking and exploring, unwind in the natural mineral waters of Banff Upper Hot Springs. While it has more of a community pool vibe than a luxury spa, the warm waters and stunning mountain views make it a perfect way to end your adventure.
✔️ Best for: Relaxing sore muscles after a long day
✔️ What to Expect: Affordable entry, warm water, gorgeous alpine views
7. Dinner in Downtown Banff 🍜
Before heading back for the night, grab a delicious meal in Banff’s lively downtown area. Expect crowds and make sure you look at parking signs before leaving your vehicle
🍜 Ramen Arashi – If you’re craving comfort food, this spot serves up some of the best ramen in Banff! It’s a little hidden, so when you get to the location – head upstairs. We waited for a table, but it was worth it.
Other Great Options:
✔️ The Bison Restaurant – Upscale Canadian cuisine with locally sourced ingredients
✔️ Eddie Burger Bar – Fun, casual spot for gourmet burgers and poutine
Final Thoughts: A Perfect Day in Banff
If you only have one day in Banff, this itinerary ensures you hit some of the most iconic spots, enjoy a mix of adventure and relaxation, and even get a taste of local dining and culture. Ultimately, one day in this area didn’t feel like enough time. There are many hiking trails and viewpoints to see beyond the basics, and unfortunately for me – I didn’t get the best weather! All of this to say – can’t wait to see more on my next journey there!
💡 Remember: For the smoothest trip, book your Moraine Lake shuttle in advance and arrive early at popular spots to avoid crowds!
