A Peaceful Day trip to Nara: Deer, Temples & Tradition
If you’re spending time in Osaka or Kyoto, a day trip to Nara is an easy and rewarding excursion. Known for its sacred deer, ancient temples, and serene parks, Nara offers a more peaceful pace compared to Japan’s bustling cities. We spent a half day in Nara, which is all you need!
Getting to Nara
We took one of the earliest trains out of Osaka, which turned out to be a smart move—by mid-morning, the crowds really start to build. Nara is about 45 minutes by train, and it’s very walkable once you arrive.
Meeting the Sacred Deer
Our first stop was Nara Park, home to hundreds of free-roaming sika deer, which are considered sacred in Shinto belief. Legend says the deer are messengers of the gods. You can buy special crackers to feed them, which is the draw of Nara to many tourists. While the deer are generally calm, a few were a bit aggressive when they spotted snacks. Some were even nipping at tourists’ clothes and hands! While it’s a popular experience, I chose to keep my distance and just observe.

Strolling Through Gardens and Temples
Next, we wandered through a beautifully landscaped Japanese garden, which offered a peaceful break from the deer chaos. There are several Japanese gardens and tea rooms you can visit within walking distance. This is where I learned not every tea room actually serves tea! Nearby, we came across one of Nara’s most iconic sites: Tōdai-ji Temple, where you can find the “Great Buddah”. While we didn’t go inside due to the long lines, you can admire the architecture and atmosphere from the massive entrance gate. If you walk from Nara Park straight to the temple, you’ll also find some smaller temples and various stores. It was nice to stroll around, looking for early blooming cherry blossoms!

A Taste of Local Flavors
After visiting the temple grounds, we headed toward a shopping street lined with snack stalls and specialty shops. At the end of the street, there’s a popular stand selling freshly made mochi—expect a line, but it moves quickly. We also found a local shop offering pressed sushi made with mackerel, a Nara specialty. It’s not raw like typical sushi and could be a great intro for anyone hesitant about eating raw fish.
Final Impressions
Should you stay overnight in Nara? I debated it! We decided on an early day trip from Osaka and wrapped up our Nara trip by early afternoon and caught a train back to Osaka before the major crowds hit. One day is plenty to experience the highlights of Nara, and it left us feeling relaxed and connected to Japan’s spiritual and cultural roots.

Tips for Your Trip to Nara:
- Get there early to beat the crowds.
- Wear comfortable walking shoes.
- Skip feeding the deer if you’re not comfortable—observing is just as fun.
- Don’t miss the mochi and mackerel sushi!
