- Visit the Halona Blowhole and witness powerful ocean sprays.
- Enjoy the scenic Makapu’u Lookout.
- Relax on the soft white sands of Waimanalo Beach.
Dinner:
- Enjoy a laid-back meal in Lanikai, or take a sunset walk at Kailua Beach.
Day 2: Southeast & Windward Oahu
Morning:
- Hike Koko Crater or Diamond Head for breathtaking panoramic views. Try for sunrise!
- Note: Diamond Head requires a reservation and is open from 6:00 AM – 4:30 PM.
Snack Break:
- Stop by Island Brew Coffee in Hawaii Kai for a well-earned caffeine boost and a light snack. This is my favorite coffee shop in the island! The views are first class and their menu is expansive and fresh.
⭐ Don’t miss out on the PB&J smoothie & the butter mochi!
Midday Adventures:
- Visit the Halona Blowhole, where you can watch powerful ocean sprays burst through the lava rock.
- Take in the incredible coastal views at Makapu’u Lookout.
- Note: If you have a strong desire to hike up to the lighthouse, you’ll see the parking just before the lookout.
- Relax on the soft white sands of Waimanalo Beach.
Dinner:
- Enjoy a laid-back meal in Lanikai, or take a sunset walk at Kailua Beach.
Day 3: Exploring the Windward Side
Morning:
- Hike the Lanikai Pillbox Trail, a short but rewarding trek with postcard-worthy views.
🚀✨ Pro Tip: Get there early to beat the crowds!

Afternoon:
- Spend your afternoon at Lanikai Beach or Kailua Beach, both known for their crystal-clear waters and soft sand.
- Stop by Lanikai Juice to grab an Acai bowl for lunch. There’s several boutiques in this area to check out too! Across the street you can also grab poke to go at Hawaii’s famous Foodland Super Market.
- Alternatively, visit Kualoa Ranch, famous for its movie sets, ATV tours, and zip-lining adventures. I enjoyed doing a quick mountain e-biking tour!
Dinner:
- Order ahead at Adele’s Country Eatery, known for its delicious locally inspired dishes – I love the ube noodles with pork belly.
- Don’t forget a cheesecake for dessert!
Day 4: North Shore Adventures
Morning:
- Start with a scenic hike at Crouching Lion, offering stunning views of the coastline. Please download the map on AllTrails before you head out. It’s a short trail, but a few people have had to be rescued.
- If you’re up for an adventure, search for hidden swings along the coast and see how many you can find!
Afternoon:
- Visit historic Hawaiian fish ponds.
- Enjoy Ted’s Bakery (try the famous pies!).
- See green sea turtles at Laniakea Beach.
- Shop & dine in Haleiwa.
- Beach-hop to Banzai Beach and Waimea Bay, hot spots for watching surfer’s in the winter!
- Spend the evening at Turtle Bay Resort and catch a gorgeous sunset.
Alternative Adventure:
- Opt for a cage-free shark diving out of Haleiwa and then head back toward Crouching Lion, checking out the beaches and swings along the way. Read about my shark experience here!
Day 5: Leeward Coast Exploration
Morning:
- Hike to Ka’ena Point, Oahu’s rugged westernmost tip (watch for Hawaiian Monk Seals).
🚨 Please keep your distance from the monk seals!
Beach Day:
- Relax at Keawaula Beach, Makaha Beach, or Ko’olina Lagoon.
- Note: Some of the beaches on this side of the island can have large swells, especially in winter. If you’re looking to swim – Ko’olina is always a safe choice!
- If you’re feeling adventurous, explore the hidden Mermaid Caves.
Dinner:
- Dine at The Beach House by 604 for oceanfront views.
- Option: Chinatown in Honolulu for a local food scene experience.
Where to stay:
I highly recommend staying near Waikiki for your first time visiting. You’ll be able to walk to many places and it’s the most lively area on island! But if you’re looking for more secluded resorts and areas, there is plenty for this too.
Moana Surfrider: This is a classic spot in the heart of downtown. One of my favorite traditions is to grab coffee here early in the morning and walk Waikiki Beach for sunrise before all the umbrellas and chairs get set up.
The Price Waikiki: A little removed from the heart of downtown, but still fairly close. It’s situated on one of the marinas, which host a variety of tour operators like Pink Sails. The Prince has an amazing infinity pool.
Disney’s Aulani: Located in a resort area known as Ko’olina, in Kapolei. In Ko’olina you’ll find man-made coves that are great for kids and adults! There’s several restaurants in the area. The parking is limited here, so if you’re planning to visit Ko’olina, staying at the resort is a great option.
Turtle Bay Resort: If you have the financial means, I highly recommend staying here. It’s a fabulous resort owned by the Ritz-Carlton. It has beautiful beaches, swimming lagoon, chair rentals, private pools (with an infinity pool), good food and more! It’s located toward the North Shore and the sunsets on this side of the island are fabulous. Don’t miss out on shark swimming if you’re coming to the North Shore.
Budget Friendly:
The Beach Waikiki Hostel: A highly rated hostel in the heart of Waikiki. Keep in mind, hostels come with trade-offs such as shared accommodations. It’s recommended to take precautions to keep your items safe. However, it also comes with strangers that may become friends and being able to participate in planned events. It’s a great option if you’re traveling solo.
Wakiki Central Hotel: A humble, private accommodation in the heart of Waikiki. Likely one of the best values you can find in the area.
Additional Recommendations

- Helena’s Hawaiian Food (authentic Hawaiian cuisine, typically ordered family style)
